Kung Fu Club Β· Leuven

We train
together.

Gong Lian is a training group for adults and motivated young people in Leuven. We practise biangan kung fu, wushu basics, and practical self-defence β€” not as students of a master, but as people who train together.

Tuesday 18:30–20:00 Leuven All levels welcome

Three pillars of practice

The Chinese characters 共练 mean “practise together.” We find motivation within ourselves and energy from each other. Our training rests on three pillars.

Wushu Jibengong

Kung Fu Basics

No kung fu without a solid foundation. We train both individual basic techniques and combinations.

  • Stances and steps
  • Kicks and jump kicks
  • Fist and hand techniques
  • Blocks and evasive movements
Five stances β€” Wubu Quan

Biangan

Whip Staff

The biangan is a staff running from the fingertips of one arm to the elbow of the other β€” about 1.40 m β€” essentially the walking stick of the foot traveller, used as a weapon.

We follow the Ma family style tradition of Tongbei Kung Fu, practising both form and applications.

Self-defence

Practical application

The third pillar is practical self-defence β€” unarmed (kicks, punches, wristlocks, armbars, blocks, evasive movements) and with the biangan. We include a focus on the right self-defence mindset.

Sessions run for ninety minutes. Most classes move through jibengong, biangan form and applications, and self-defence work β€” though the emphasis shifts depending on what the group is working on. No prior martial arts experience is required. A first trial class is always free.

Jan with biangan

Jan β€” trainer and fellow practitioner

I have been practising martial arts for most of my adult life β€” biangan kung fu, modern wushu, karate, and bujinkan ninjutsu among others. Gong Lian is not a school I founded to teach; it is a training group I am building so that I can keep practising, with others.

My background is in education β€” I have been a teacher for over twenty years. That shapes how I approach a training group: I believe in psychological safety, in rewarding effort, and in the idea that showing up consistently matters more than performing perfectly.

I train biangan from the Ma family style of Tongbei Kung Fu. To my knowledge, we are the only group practising biangan in Belgium.

Annual contribution

We work with an annual fee rather than per-session payments. This allows us to book a fixed training space for the whole year and keeps the group stable regardless of who attends on any given evening.
